Hartlepool Tall Ships Race

7-10th August 2010

ORGANISERS have declared The Tall Ships Races 2010 at Hartlepool an outstanding success.

With 59 Tall Ships in attendance in the North East port, visitors flocked to Hartlepool in their tens of thousands to soak up the atmosphere of the event.

Up to a million visitors were expected over the four days of the event and transport and car parking systems coping well with the numbers. In addition to the Tall Ships there were four days of free live music with bands such as Ocean Colour Scene, Echo and the Bunnymen, Doves and Seth Lakeman. Other highlights included a World Market, celebrity chefs, street theatre, a folk festival, BBC’s Bang Goes The Theory and fireworks on three evenings.

Sail Training International Chairman Knut Western said:  “We have received a great welcome in Hartlepool.  There has been a tremendous atmosphere, with smiles on everyone’s faces, and all the crews I have spoken to are delighted at their reception. Over 2,000 young trainees have arrived here on the fleet and are looking forward to the fun and activities Hartlepool has in store for them.”

Hartlepool Mayor Stuart Drummond, who officially opened the four-day jamboree, added:  “The Tall Ships are an amazing spectacle and one which Hartlepool won’t forget for a very long time.
“The Tall Ships Village site has been very busy and we even had 70,000 people here on Friday, before the event had officially begun.
“We have had a tremendous amount of positive feedback, both from local people and visitors from elsewhere.
“There are so many people to thank for getting the event off to such a good start.  It has taken a vast amount of work behind the scenes.  The successful start is all down to the teamwork between local people, volunteers and all the organisations involved for playing their part – and the weather, which has been kind to us.”

The Tall Ships fleet is providing a magnificent spectacle at the end of The Tall Ships Races 2010. The vessels have sailed from Kristiansand in Norway in the second and final race.

Cleveland Emergency Planning unit has been instrumental in the planning for the event over the past 3 years. Not only did they chair the Safety Advisory Group meetings they were also the authors of the Event Control, safety and emergency plan and organisers of the exercises to test the plans in the run up to the event. During the event itself members of the team operated in event control keeping an overview of events and advising on matters when required.
