Dunkirk Spirit Lives on in Redcar

Redcar seafront recently became the set of a new blockbuster film starring Keira Knightley and James McAvoy.  The film is principally a love story based on Ian McEwan's novel 'Atonement'.  The scenes shot in Redcar are sequences relating to the evacuation of Dunkirk involving adaptations to buildings to make them look like they are bomb damaged with tons of rubble brought in especially.  War time equipment was strewn across the beach and anti-aircraft guns were seen on the seafront for the first time since the last war.  Around 1000 extras were employed over a number of days to play the British soldiers, most were from the local area.
