Flooding on Hartington Road and Newport Road 22nd December 2006

A water main was damaged during the development of the North Riding Infirmary site in Middlesbrough causing a serious flood.  Excavators damaged the 3" pipeline which supplied the hospital site, flooding Newport Road and Hartington Road causing traffic chaos in minutes and threatening to damage nearby properties.

Prompt action by Northumbrian Water and Middlesbrough Council limited the damage whilst the emergency services managed the resultant traffic problems.  The water main was a spur off the mains supply allowing the pipe to be easily isolated. Domestic water supplies were not affected, however, the added threat of freezing temperatures over night meant that work had to progress quickly to clear the surface water.

Evacuation centres were put on stand-by in case residents needed to be evacuated from their homes, fortunately these were not needed.  Gritting lorries were also put on standby so that the area could be gritted once the water was cleared.
